  • Biodiesel:

    FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters):
Biodiesel and fossil diesel have different chemical compositions, therefore, they can not act as a substitute for each other. Biodiesel is blended into fossil diesel, max at 7%. A FAME portion above 7% requires a modification of the engine.

    Renewable diesel:

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a high-quality renewable diesel called an "advanced biofuel" or "second-generation biofuel". It’s made out of advanced raw materials such as residues and waste. HVO has a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel. This chemical resemblance enables renewable diesel to be used in all diesel engines in up to a 100% concentration, or to be blended in any ratio with fossil diesel.

  • Three sources of feedstocks used in the production of renewable fuels from triglycerides are corn, soybean and animal fats. After processing they make the following commodities:
    UCO
    Tallow
    Fatty acids
    POME
    Brown grease
    Soapstock

  • Biofuel ticket HBE (Netherlands)
There are three types of HBE: HBE Advanced, HBE Conventional and HBE Other.

Each gigajoule of renewable energy that companies physically deliver to the Dutch transport sector generates one HBE that fuel suppliers can trade to help achieve their annual obligation.

HBEs are created by claiming deliveries of renewable energy in the Energy for Transport Registry. Source

  • The quota obligation applies to companies that need to minimize or offset emissions from the fuels they place on the market. These are primarily companies that sell diesel or petrol. The resulting greenhouse gases are to be compensated. The quote is set as a percentage that increases with each year.
Suppliers of sustainable biofuel and purely electric car owners generate THG-quote. Source.

Since January 1, 2022, owners of electric vehicles can receive money for the saved CO2 emissions through the greenhouse gas reduction quota (THG-quote). This also applies to e-motorcycles and e-scooters. Source.
The THG quote is measured in percent. It describes the share of sustainable fuels in relation to the total amount, including fossil fuels. The required quota of alternative fuels increases every year.

  • The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) is one of the UK Government’s main policies for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from road transport in the UK.

Suppliers of sustainable biofuel can apply for Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates (RTFCs).

One RTFC is issued per litre/kg of liquid biofuel derived from crop based feedstocks. Biofuels produced from wastes, non- agricultural residues, non-food cellulosic material, and ligno-cellulosic material are issued twice the number of RTFCs per litre/kg1 to reflect the lower risk that these materials will cause undesirable impacts. Source.

Refiners, importers and any others who supply more than 450,000 litres of road transport fuel (fossil) per year to the UK market are obligated under the RTFO. Source.

  • The Bioethanol market is segmented by Feedstock Type (Sugarcane, Corn, Wheat, and Other Feedstock Types)

  • Under mandate M/475, CEN/PC 408 developed specifications for biomethane:
    - EN 16723-1 for injection into natural gas grids
    - EN 16723-2 for transport fuel. Source.
